Our Summer education programs are open for registration! Wheelock Family Theatre at Boston University provides a dynamic and exciting drama curriculum for young actors that teach drama skills while connecting those skills to your child’s overall development. WFT@BU offers summer classes for students entering kindergarten through high school in the fall of 2019.

Beforecare, from 8am to 9am, is available for an additional $50/week.

Aftercare, from 3:30pm to 5:00pm is available for an additional $75/week.

Puppet Academy (In Collaboration with Puppet Showplace Theater)

Dive into the wildly creative and interdisciplinary world of puppetry arts! This summer, kids of all ages will have a unique opportunity to learn the secrets of crafting extraordinary characters and bringing them to life on stage and screen. Guided by a dream team of professional puppeteers, each day we will cover a different building and performance technique, from marionettes to mouth puppets, from hand puppets to shadows. We'll learn to see creative inspiration in found objects and materials, and to tell stories using movement and "visual vocabulary." Professional Boston area Circus artists will lead classes each day in circus skills such as clowning, juggling, tumbling, spinning plates, hula hoops, acrobatics, Chinese yo-yo and more! In addition, Wheelock Family Theatre teaching artists will lead classes in physical comedy, musical theatre and movement.
All together, making for a three-ring circus of an experience!

Inspired by the story and music of Mary Poppins, students will learn to “sing a story” by exploring the various voices that can be produced by using appropriate vocal technique. Students will connect voice to posture, gesture, and full-body movement through improvisation to create vivid characters. They will “dance a story” by learning to use creative movement to bring a story to life. Not all actors need to dance, but learning how to use a creative and flexible range of movement will help young actors feel more confident on stage, develop physically interesting characters, and add another skill to their actor toolbox. Play Production JR: Magic Treehouse Adventures

Inspired by the time traveling, place-hopping, adventurous characters in the Magic Treehouse series, students will develop characters through improvisation, movement and vocal exercises to bring a story to life. Make it up as you go! Learn to trust your instincts, make dynamic choices on the fly, and spontaneously create original characters and story lines. TYA Tour: Residency at the Boston Children's Museum (Grades 8-12)

The TYA Tour gives experienced teen performers the opportunity to rehearse, tour and perform a show for for young audiences. For the first week, actors rehearse a show written for young audiences, title TBA. The second week actors will take their show to the Boston Children's Museum to perform for their patrons.

Theatre Design Intensive (Grades 6 -12)

A dynamic immersion in the theatre crafts that are vital to professional stage productions. This course balances theory with practical experience through the study of scenic, prop, costume, lighting, and sound design. Students will work with WFT’s professional technical staff during this two week intensive, designing and building technical elements for the Advanced Performance Intensives.

Theatre for Social Change - Voice it, Create it, Act it!

Explores situations of challenge or conflict in participants’ lives and communities through devised theatre. Using current events as a springboard, students will devise ensemble pieces that engage audiences in conversation about themes of social justice. Borrowing techniques from Image Theatre, Playback Theatre, and other types of applied drama, students will create fresh, innovative theatre about issues that are important to them. At the final class, families and friends are invited to be part of the conversation.

Puppet Academy (In Collaboration with Puppet Showplace Theater)

Dive into the wildly creative and interdisciplinary world of puppetry arts! This summer, kids of all ages will have a unique opportunity to learn the secrets of crafting extraordinary characters and bringing them to life on stage and screen. Guided by a dream team of professional puppeteers, each day we will cover a different building and performance technique, from marionettes to mouth puppets, from hand puppets to shadows. We'll learn to see creative inspiration in found objects and materials, and to tell stories using movement and "visual vocabulary." Mini performances and fun creative challenges will take place throughout the week, along with mini performances by veteran puppeteers. No prior puppetry or theater experience is necessary. Join us for a fun and imaginative start to summer vacation!

Musical Theatre Cabaret: Today's Tony Winners (NEW 2-week program)

Students will create their very own musical cabaret show. The ensemble will select songs and scenes to present in a Musical Theatre Cabaret at the end of the week. Great for beginners and experienced performers. We will challenge students with choreography, vocal production, singing technique and acting exercises that will help them grow individually and as an ensemble.Family and friends will be invited to the Cabaret. Previous musical theatre experience and required.


Final performance on Thursday, July 18th at 7.

Week of July 22

A Night at the Improv

Make it up as you go! Learn to trust your instincts, make dynamic choices on the fly, and spontaneously create original characters and story lines. Explore the rules of improv and classic improv structures and techniques as you prepare to engage the audience in a laugh-filled “Night at the Improv.” A final demonstration for family and friends will take place at 2:30 p.m. on the last day of class.

TYA Tour: Residency at the Boston Children's Museum (Grades 8-12)

The TYA Tour gives experienced teen performers the opportunity to rehearse, tour and perform a show for for young audiences. For the first week, actors rehearse a show written for young audiences, title TBA. The second week actors will take their show to the Boston Children's Museum to perform for their patrons.

Previous stage experience, a willingness to take artistic risks, and permission of the director required. Send jerih@bu.edu a resume and statement of interest.

Scene Study: Award Winning Plays

Students will work on select scenes to read between the lines and create characters with depth, reveal motivations, obstacles, relationships and more. This will take students’ acting to new levels as they deepen acting skills and work in an ensemble to convey complex stories to an audience. Students will share these scenes with family and friends at 3pm the final day of class.

Week of August 5

Advanced Performance Intensive (Grades 9-12)

This program is designed for teens in high school with prior training and performance experience committed to deepening their acting skills and knowledge of the craft. Through challenging exercises in vocal, movement, and character work and exploration of scenes from outstanding plays, students will experience the actor’s process in depth. Culminates in an Acting Showcase on the WFT main stage on Friday, August 16 at 8pm.

Theatre Design Intensive (Grades 6 -12)

Previous Experience Suggested but not required


A dynamic immersion in the theatre crafts that are vital to professional stage productions. This course balances theory with practical experience through the study of scenic, prop, costume, lighting, and sound design. Students will work with WFT’s professional technical staff during this two week intensive, designing and building technical elements for the Advanced Performance Intensives.

Work will be shared at the Final Performances on Friday, August 16th at 6:30pm and 8pm

Week of August 19

Under the Big Top

Come one, Come all to the Greatest Show on Earth! We will bring our summer to a rousing finish with a week-long exploration of the theatrical world of the circus. Professional Boston area Circus artists will lead classes each day in circus skills such as clowning, juggling, tumbling, spinning plates, hula hoops, acrobatics, Chinese yo-yo and more! In addition, Wheelock Family Theatre teaching artists will lead classes in physical comedy, musical theatre and movement.
All together, making for a three-ring circus of an experience!
Families are invited to join us under the big top at 2:00 p.m.on the last afternoon for a sharing of the week’s learning as we celebrate the end of another fun-filled summer at Wheelock Family Theatre!
