2023/24 Age Recommendations

Each production is directed to appeal to both young people and adults. WFT @ BU recognizes that some plays may not be suitable for every age, and we do not encourage attendance by children less than 3 years of age, due to loud noises, bright lights and large potential crowd.

The Addams Family

Recommended for ages 8+

The Addams Family is a musical comedy. As a fixture of popular culture, the Addams family members are known for their dark humor, satirical demeanor and interests. Click here for a full synopsis of the production. Below are specific references and moments of weaponry, death, and mature relations and innuendos:

  • Throughout the show, moments of weaponry include:
    • Addams Family members reference a dead animal shot offstage with bow and arrow
    • A prop bow and arrow is used to shoot an apple on top of Wednesday’s head
  • Throughout the show, themes of death are portrayed through
    • The Addams Family Ancestors playfully rising from the dead and participating throughout the show
    • Singing and dancing about death
    • Mentioning death in a lighthearted way
  • Throughout the show, themes of mature relations and innuendos include:
    • Gomez Addams praises wife, Morticia, for being a “gymnast in the bedroom”
  • Other notable moments:
    • Wednesday Addams straps her brother Pugsley into a ratchet wheel and “stretches” his limb
    • Gomez presents a “Chair of Persuasion”, a torture device supposedly used in the Spanish Inquisition

Mr. Popper’s Penguins

Recommended for ages 3+

A Wrinkle in Time

Recommended for ages 9+

John Glore’s adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s “A Wrinkle in Time” contains the following content and themes, some of which audience members may find sensitive or challenging. Please note that individual sensitivities vary, and this advisory aims to assist audiences in making informed decisions.

  1. Fantasy Themes: The play includes elements of time travel, otherworldly beings, and fantastical landscapes. Audiences who may be sensitive to surreal or abstract concepts should be prepared for these imaginative elements.
  2. Mild Peril: The storyline involves the characters facing challenges and dangers as they embark on a journey across different dimensions. While the peril is presented within the context of a fantastical adventure, some scenes may be intense for young or sensitive viewers.
  3. Family Dynamics: The play touches on family relationships, including the bond between siblings and the influence of parental figures. Some scenes may depict familial conflicts or emotional moments.
  4. Visual and Sound Effects: The production will utilize visual and sound effects to enhance the otherworldly atmosphere. Individuals sensitive to light or sound effects should be aware of their presence in the performance.
  5. Positive Themes: The play explores themes of friendship, courage, and the triumph of good over evil. 

While the play is generally suitable for audiences ages 9+, it may be appropriate for younger audiences. you are encouraged to consider the sensitivity and age of your student(s)/child(ren) before purchasing your tickets.
