ABOUT THE SHOW

Four eccentric Broadway stars are in desperate need of a new stage. So when they hear that trouble is brewing around a small-town prom, they know that it’s time to put a spotlight on the issue…and themselves. The town’s parents want to keep the high school dance on the straight and narrow—but when one student just wants to bring her girlfriend to prom, the entire town has a date with destiny. On a mission to transform lives, Broadway’s brassiest join forces with a courageous girl and the town’s citizens and the result is love that brings them all together.

Winner of the Drama Desk Award for Best Musical

Throughout the show check out the prom-centered exhibit:

It’s Your Party

High school prom has long been a major milestone for American teenagers, but for LGBTQ+ teens, going to prom as themselves is not always possible or safe. This exhibition looks at how the queer community has reclaimed the prom as a space of joy, self-expression, and celebration.

LGBTQ+ organizations have for decades held alternative proms where queer youth can dress as they wish, and bring whom they wish, alongside their peers in an environment free from discrimination. The first LGBTQ+ youth prom was held right here in Boston in 1981.

Alongside vintage images from these early LGBTQ+ youth proms, It’s Your Party features artwork surrounding themes of queer joy and nostalgia. The exhibition asks: How do rituals like prom shape our identities and strengthen our community bonds? How can we look to our past to create a world where everyone can grow up as their most authentic selves?
